First, apologies for writing about something other than baseball, as I know that’s what you come here for.
Unfortunately, I was injured and will require surgery, so the updates will be sporadic for the time being.
Maybe that’s a good thing.
Me and the kid often talk about the butterfly effect and how life can literally change at any moment and it did for me Tuesday. One innocuous, split-second decision that I’ve made thousands of times before.
I’ll be OK.
I’m grateful for the Astros fans that I’ve never met that showed kindness and compassion for a stranger. I’m grateful that my teenager showed incredible compassion for his “Old Man”.
My boy and I often talk about karma, too. I had let some older fans cut in line to get out in front of us in Arlington, telling my son, “It’s the right thing to do and maybe it’ll bring us some karma.”
When the strangers helped me the very next day, my boy said, “It’s that karma you talked about, Dad.”
Indeed.
“I hope this didn’t ruin the trip for you, Dad.”
“Are you kidding me? We spent three days together, just me and you, traveling the roads, talking about life and baseball and watching the Astros win. We saw the craziest game in Arlington and a routine one in Houston. It was a great trip.”
Life throws you curveballs and you deal with them.
If I’m up to it, I’ll have a baseball update tomorrow.
Goodness, Marty......all the best for a quick recovery! The good news is you have a lad who loves you, whom you're raising on baseball! Also, life's curveballs, I happen to know, are one's that are right in your wheelhouse! Crack it over the fence!--Brad
