Earlier this month we debuted our Future Astros Page to keep you apprised of what’s going on with Astros prospects.
One of those that we profiled in the offseason is 2023 first round pick Brice Matthews.
Matthews got off to a bit of a slow start in 2024, got injured, went on a rehab assignment and came back blistering hot in June, slashing .391/.472/.804 with 6 home runs and 12 RBI in 11 games.
That earned Matthews a promotion to AA Corpus Christi on Monday.
Right-handed pitcher Ethan Pecko, the Astros 6th round pick in 2023 was also promoted, jumping from A Fayetteville to A+ Asheville.
As Matthews was promoted to Corpus, the Astros decided to part ways with J.C. Correa, who had been with the Hooks at the time of his release.
With Jeremy Pena ensconced at shortstop and only in his third big league season, there were immediate questions about what position the Astros might have in mind for Matthews.
It’ll be interesting to see where Matthews sees playing time in Corpus, but for his career he’s played 4 games (35 innings) at third base (All with Asheville), 44 at shortstop and 12 as a DH.
Corpus Christi already has 2023 9th-round pick Jeron Williams on their roster.
Williams who played college ball at Toledo, was promoted to AA on May 28th and is slashing .208/.311/.340 in 15 games with the Hooks and played shortstop on Sunday.
Williams has also played second and third in his MiLB career.
